Hi, I’m David Kern, and I combine a solid foundation in software engineering with a strong focus on user-centered design. I bring a combination of technical expertise and design insight to every project, whether conducting research, collaborating with teams, or creating user-centered experiences.
In my role as a lecturer in computer science at FHNW, I teach usability principles and user interface design, guiding students through user-centered methods and practical problem-solving. I also lead courses on requirements engineering, where I emphasize the importance of gathering user needs and structuring them effectively. It’s rewarding to mentor students as they develop their own skills in design thinking and analysis.
As a Research Assistant, I’ve contributed to European and Swiss innovation projects, including EU Horizon 2020 and Innosuisse, where I analyze user behavior and conduct user tests. My work here involves developing UX concepts that align closely with the needs of specific user groups, using both research and testing to ensure designs are genuinely user-centered. Over time, I’ve led more than 20 user tests to identify ways to improve user experience and bridge gaps in usability, working collaboratively with diverse teams to implement these insights.
My background as a software engineer gives me hands-on experience with frameworks like React, Vue, and Flutter, enabling me to bring a practical approach to the design process. I’m skilled in creating responsive, smooth user interfaces that not only look great but are also technically sound and accessible across platforms.
Outside of work, I recharge through floorball and cycling, and I take on freelance web design projects that allow me to explore new creative ideas. These hobbies keep me active, and ready to bring fresh perspectives into my UX work.
